Australian Beach Is The Scene Of Bizarre Kangaroo Rescue
On a reasonably quiet beach on the gold coast of Australia, a heroic rescue took place to save a kangaroo that very nearly drowned.
Local surfer and general extreme sports athlete Neil McCallum spotted an object out to sea that he had never seen before. It was swimming very poorly and kept getting swept under the waves. As he shielded his eyes to get a better look he saw that it was in fact an infant kangaroo that had bizarrely found its way quite a distance out to sea. Neil thought quickly and grabbing one of larger surfboards he headed out to see if he could help the poor creature.
When he got to the Kangaroo it was very tired. It had been some time in the water and it was having to fight against repetitive beatings from the waves. Niel did make an attempt to hoist the animal up onto his surfboard, but the kangaroo wasn't very happy with this and jumped back into the sea. A number of people in kayaks were also in the area but not close enough to help. Neil changed his tact and and with the kangaroo secure under one arm, he used the other to paddle back to land. Although a little worse for ware, both Neil and the roo made it back onto solid ground.
Experts are at loss as why the kangaroo thought it could swim, although they have named him Ian, after their national swimming champion Ian Thorpe. “Kangaroos are definitely not known for their swimming abilities" states Harry Kernel of the Queensland Nature Park. They normally stick to land where they can move pretty well he continued, but obviously this one fancied a bit of a dip.
Ian is now back to full strength and has been eating well at an animal shelter close by. When he keepers are happy they will release him into the wild and hopefully he has learnt his lesson about water. Neil refuses to take any praise for his actions, saying that anyone would have done the same if they had seen a helpless creature in trouble.
